2025 Summer Interns

The summer internship with Exploring Our Deep World provides individuals with a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of exploration and discovery. Working within a small team allows interns to collaborate on various projects and problems that arise. Some days are spent troubleshooting ROVs, and some are spent on the water scanning the bottom for shipwrecks. No two days are the same, and they are always full of surprises. This summer there have been multiple wrecks found, with visits to some of the oldest wrecks in Lake Ontario, including the Schooner Milan.

Interns operate ROVs to gather images of found wrecks, which are then used to create 3D models of what the wrecks look like on the bottom. It is a rewarding job that provides interns with skills gained nowhere else. Every intern has different educational backgrounds, skills, and abilities; there is a spot for anyone in the team who is willing to show up, learn, and put in the work.

Sam (Shmam), 📍  New York

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! Nope, it's just Sam. Sam is one of three interns from Rochester, NY. His favorite part of the job is working on the boat. You can usually find him at the helm running perfect scan lines of the lake.
Sam recently just got SCUBA certified and is excited to start exploring the wrecks up close underwater. Outside of work, Sam enjoys swimming, running, weight lifting, and playing video games.

Jack (Baby Jackery), 📍New York

Meet our Jack of all trades! Jack's favorite part of the job is driving the boat (very fast). When Jack's not on the boat you can most likely find him fishing. Jack dreams of catching a musky... keep on dreaming, Jack!
Jack has also worked on the fruit farm that his family owns and is always happy to bring some fruit for the other interns.

Igor,📍New York

Meet Igor! He is a Game Design & Development and History double major at RIT. He's always looking for new ways to bridge technology with the humanities. On the job, he likes to work with everything - from ROVs to community outreach. Outside of work, Igor enjoys reading history books and collecting decks of playing cards.

Shanea (Shuh-nay-uh),📍Connecticut

Meet Shanea! She studies Ocean Engineering at URI with fellow intern Andrew. Shanea works hard to publish all our sonar recordings (a very big job). Fun fact - Shanea's favorite food are dill pickles.
Outside of work Shanea enjoys working out - one day she hopes to be stronger than Sam... we all fear that day.

As a proud member of the Explorers Club, he is always seeking new opportunities to further exploration and science. Fun fact: Trent has visited all seven continents!

Andrew, 📍Rhode Island

Meet Andrew! Andrew studies Ocean Engineering with Shanea at URI. Andrew loves all things ROV and has even built an ROV of his own (its name is Pringle). Andrew has many interests including coding with Python, playing disc golf, and painting in parks.
