Are you curious about the secrets beneath the surface of the deep waters of our world? Do you want hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, real-world exploration, and a chance to contribute to meaningful underwater discoveries?
Exploring Our Deep World (EODW) is offering an exciting, paid internship opportunity during the Summer 2025, based out of Rochester, NY. Join us on Lake Ontario as we conduct shipwreck search, survey, and documentation projects. This unique opportunity is ideal for students or recent grads with a passion for marine exploration, remote sensing, and hands-on fieldwork.
What You'll DoYou’ll be part of a small, motivated team working on a real-world project involving:● Shipwreck search, survey, and documentation● Use of remote sensing technologies including side-scan sonar and ROVs (remotelyoperated vehicles)● Data collection, processing, and publishing of results● Supporting scuba diving operations for up-close wreck explorationInternship Structure● Training (First 4 Weeks): Intensive, hands-on training in the field and in the lab.● Project Execution: Interns will take ownership of tasks, applying what they’ve learned toindependently carry out project responsibilities.Key Responsibilities● Operate and maintain side-scan sonar towed behind a boat● Process and analyze sonar data; identify anomalies and targets● Deploy and navigate an ROV (using dead reckoning, USBL, etc.)● Capture and download footage, log and edit discoveries● Build photogrammetry models of underwater features and shipwrecks● Assist scuba divers on wreck dives (non-diving support role)● Work both on the water and in-office, often for extended hoursWhat We’re Looking For
● Technically Proficient: Comfortable with computers, able to learn new software quickly
● Field-Ready: Able to work outdoors on Lake Ontario (not prone to seasickness), hands-on
with gear
● Independent & Driven: Self-starter who can manage tasks and problem-solve in the field
● Fast Learner: Able to absorb and apply complex ideas quickly and effectivelyBonus Skills (Not Required, But a Plus)
● Experience with GIS, sonar interpretation, photogrammetry, or video editing
● Boating or marine experience
● Engineering, archaeology, marine science, or data science background
